Amy Elkin is chief creative officer at Dotted Line Collaborations.

New position: chief creative officer at Dotted Line Collaborations, a full service branding and marketing firm based in Henrico County. The company was founded in 2014.

Previous position: creative director, The Martin Agency

Education: bachelor’s degree, Virginia Commonwealth University, 1995

Career: The Martin Agency, interactive division and then its creative department, 1996-2015; Dotted Line Collaborations, 2015-present

Best career move: “The Martin Agency was where I grew my career for nearly 20 years, and it was where I learned everything I know about advertising. There, I realized my best work came from working with small teams. I never imagined joining a small team permanently, but once I met the people at Dotted Line, I was energized about taking my past experiences and applying them to build a new, more personalized approach to advertising.”

Career goal: “To create amazing work that positively impacts our clients, the people who experience it and the people who created it.

The best advice she ever received: “The former president of The Martin Agency, (the late) Mike Hughes, used to say, ‘Do work you love with people you love.”’

The most difficult situation faced on the job: “We’re a growing team made up of big talent, and we’re excited about what’s to come for the firm. It can be challenging to balance the enthusiasm and passion for the work with the demands of everyday life.”

Career tip for students: “As an adjunct professor at the VCU Brandcenter, I tell my students: ‘Never stop learning, growing and pushing yourself. Constantly try to do things you’ve never done before, and keep an open mind.”’

What motivates her: “I get a rush when I know we have a great idea that will make a big impact for one of our clients. When we see our ideas come to fruition and the effect that has on our clients’ success, it’s thrilling.”

Role models: “My father, Bill Ellen, and the former creative president of the Martin Agency, Mike Hughes. They were strong, compassionate, honest and hard-working and had a sense of humor. They loved their jobs, and their employees loved them. I miss not having them around for advice today, but I know in my heart they’d be proud.”

Family: husband, Eric Elkin; son, Kole; and daughter, Bella

Favorite quote: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” — Pablo Picasso

Pastimes: “When I’m not working, I like doing puzzles and water sports and spending time with my family and friends. I also like to paint in acrylic on large canvases.”

Most memorable book or movie: “Coming from a busy mom who’s always on the go, the movie ‘Bad Moms’ cracks me up, especially the grocery store scene.”

Favorite food or restaurant: “Sushi and Mexican. In fact, I heard the team is taking me to Wong Gonzalez for my birthday this month to celebrate.”

Ideal vacation: “Anywhere with a sandy beach, blue water and fun drinks.”
