Crossing the Finish Line to a Winning Campaign

You may not know this about me, but when I’m not taking care of clients as Dotted Line’s Marketing Manager, I’m an avid marathon runner. Last month, I ran my 10th marathon as part of Disney’s Dopey Challenge (48.6 miles over 4 days…I know, yikes…) and next month I’ll be running in my first ever Boston Marathon, a race that has been on my bucket list for years! Recently, during a quiet morning run, I got to thinking about all the parallels between what it takes to run a marathon and how we help clients plan, create and execute a successful marketing campaign.

Plan ahead. When you decide to run a marathon, you shouldn’t try to run 26 miles during week 1 of your training. You should establish realistic goals, determine what steps you’ll need to take to get there and set a timeline for when you plan to achieve each milestone. The same goes for a successful marketing campaign. It starts with understanding your core strengths and challenges and determining the right path forward.

Find the pace that works for you. If you don’t pace yourself during a marathon, you’ll “hit the wall” as runners say, or worse, end up injured. So, how does this relate to building a successful marketing campaign? If you don’t take the time to find the strategy that works best for your organization, you may realize after some time that you’ve wasted your energy and resources on strategies that aren’t working; or worse, you may lose momentum completely.

Consider a coach. Motivating yourself to train is much easier when you have someone to help you define your goals, work with you to create a plan and provide training tips along the way to help you cross the finish line. Like your coach, having a marketing partner can jumpstart your efforts, uncover creative ideas that will take your campaign to the next level and help you to see the work from concept to completion.

Don’t forget the reward! One of the best parts of running a race is crossing the finish line, receiving your medal, and celebrating your accomplishment. It means that all your hard work has paid off and you’ve finally made it! The same is true for your marketing campaign. When your organization starts to grow, you’re reaching new audiences and you begin to see the return on your investment, it will feel just like getting that coveted medal at the end of the race.
